1964 Lee Petty was back in apparent good health and fully recovered from his injuries when the 1964 season started. He mostly worked in the pits as a mechanic and chose not to race in any high speed tracks and his last effort occurred at Watkins Glenn. He never got back into another car. Lee Petty for all practical purposes no longer ran Petty Enterprises. He deferred the decisions to his son Richard. After the dominating 1964 Daytona win and the 1964 Grand National Championship that year Richard Petty no longer stood in the shadow of his father. His remarkable accomplishment in 1964 was the highest total number of races entered that year at 61 races. Richard Petty was locked into a heated three way battle for the Championship with Ned Jarrett and David Pearson.
So close were Ned Jarrett and Richard Petty that the Championship came down to number of events entered. Richard had competed in all 61 events. Ned Jarrett had been in 59 events, two less than Richard. That was the main difference that clinched the Grand National Title that year.
